St.
Joseph's Secondary School has been awarded the major environmental
award of the Green Flag by An Taisce in conjunction with
Mayo County Council. It was raised by the school Trustee, Bishop
Brendan Kelly on Thursday, May 29th after 11am Mass.

Great
credit for the award is due to Mrs. Breege McHale, Green Flag
Co-ordinator and her team comprising of Transition Year, 10
Second Year students, staff members Miss Heavey and Mrs Fielding,
Mr. Anthony Ruane, Local Community Representative and the whole
school community. Comhghairdeas le chuile dhuine a bhí
bainteach ann.

Congruatulations
to Darragh Quinn and Shane McHale who are members of the Mayo
Minor GAA team. Deirdre Gallagher is a member of the Mayo Ladies
GAA teams at Senior and Junior levels.

The
First Years spent a most enjoyable day in Inis Mór, Aran
Islands on May 9th. Following a long trek to Dún Aenghus,
they enjoyed a barbecue on Cill Muirbhí beach before
returning home after a pleasant outing.
- Retreats
have now taken place for Junior and Senior students. The school
is most grateful to Fr. Joseph Gavigan and the Religion teachers
for their hard work and attention to the religious faith of our
pupils.

Joseph's is listed in the top 400 secondary schools in Ireland.
It is ranked 127th in Ireland and 6th in Mayo. It is
the 8th largest provider in Ireland of students to Institutes
of Technology. It sends 80% of its Leaving Certificate students

THREE
students at St. Joseph's Secondary School, Foxford were among
the prizewinners at the 2008 BT Young Scientist of the year
Exhibition. Sean Hynes, Conor Phillips and Eamonn Wlash were
awarded 2nd place in the Senior Technology Section for
their project entitled 'Hand Held Timed Drug Dispenser', which
reminds patients to take their pills on time. The group was
presented with its prize at a ceremony in the RDS attended by
students from a total of 210 schools from across the country.
About
36,000 visitors attended the exhibition where 1,128 students
displayed their projects. The school had three other projects
in the competition, which was attended by their Parents and
teachers, Miss Marie Lavin and Declan Cafferkey.
- The
Second Year CSPE students invited a speaker into the school
from Amnesty International on Wednesday November 28th, 2007. The
students were responsible for organising the event. Marie-Anne
Michel answered all the students questions about refugees and
asylum seekers. A donation towards the work of Amnesty International
was made. Marie-Anne thanked all the students for the welcome
she received. She also commented on the organisation and interest
shown in the topic.
- A
new I.T. Room was installed during the summer with state
of the art facilities including data projectors, server etc. This
is an excellent addition to our I.T facilities and we wish the
students every good luck with using the new room.
- As
part of the Summer Works Scheme 2007 toilet facilities
in the school have been upgraded. We are very grateful to the
DES for providing us with the grant to carry out these much needed
upgrades.

A new Textiles Room is now in use in the Top School. This
is a welcome addition to the Home-Economics Department. The furniture
and equipment for the room has been funded by the Department of
Education and Science.
